»Come with me on a journey through our planet's past — to times when the moon was closer and the tides were higher, when the days were shorter but there were more of them in a year. To times before there were wildfires — for fires could not burn before land plants evolved and thus provided them with fuel. Five hundred million years ago, the first wildfires had not yet been lit.
In this lecture, I will consider problems a time traveller would face — such as jet lag, and what food to bring. I will discuss what we can safely infer about the past, and what remains a mystery. And I will discuss some of the challenges in finding the information I need in order to construct a thoughtful account of time travel.«

Olivia Judson studierte Biologie an der Stanford University und promovierte in Oxford bei dem berühmten Evolutionsbiologen William D. Hamilton. Bekannt wurde sie vor allem durch ihre Arbeit als Wissenschaftsjournalistin. Bereits 1996 schrieb sie für die Zeitschrift Economist und gewann mit ihrem Artikel »Sex is War« 1998 den »Glaxo Wellcome Prize« der Association of British Science Writers. Berühmtheit erlangte sie durch ihr erstes Buch mit dem Titel »Die raffinierten Sexpraktiken der Tiere« (Dr. Tatiana's sex advice to all creation: The definitive guide to the evolutionary biology of sex), das 2002 veröffentlicht wurde. Das humoristisch geschriebene Buch über die verschiedenen Sexualpraktiken in der Tierwelt verkaufte sich als Bestseller und wurde 2003 für den Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction nominiert. Die BBC übertrug ihr die Moderation einer Reihe von Fernsehsendungen zum Themenkreis des Buches, die ein großer Erfolg wurde. Neben Ihrer Tätigkeit als Research Fellow am Imperial College, London, setzt Olivia Judson ihre Autorentätigkeit durch diverse Artikel u. a. für die Zeitschriften Nature, The Atlantic oder Natural History fort. Für die New York Times schrieb sie zwischen 2008 und 2010 als Online-Kolumnistin. 2008 wurde ihr Artikel »The Selfless Gene«, welcher in der Zeitschrift The Atlantic erschien, für den Preis »The Best American Science and Nature Writing« nominiert. Derzeit weilt Olivia Judson am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin und arbeitet an ihrem zweiten Buch »Dinosaur Eggs for Breakfast«.
