Zoology in Pictures at the Tieranatomisches Theater shows elaborately illustrated zoological wall charts from the 19th and 20th centuries. The aquarelle of a dove allows the viewer to look deep under the skin. The furs of marsupials match the rough line of a charcoal drawing. The forms and anatomy of the animal world is staged with artistic and scientific precision, sometimes in soft pastel, sometimes in contrasting colours. Wall charts have been used since the middle of the 19th century in schools and universities in teaching. Today they are sought-after collector's items as they reveal the biological and artistic view on animal anatomy and morphology in the mirror of the respective time. Designed in close cooperation between researchers and graphic artists, they represent an intersection between science and art.

In several chapters, the exhibition lights up different scientific perspectives on animal bodies, starting with an introduction into various forms of visualisation and functions of the wall charts in teaching. Artistic techniques such as lithography, ink or pen drawing correspond with the representation of anatomical, physiological or ecological features. A further part of the exhibition presents the most artistic wall charts from two centuries and at the same time shows how representation has changed from a naturalistic, detailed to a rational-schematic design. Among other aspects, wall charts from Humboldt-Universität in East Berlin and Freie Universität in West Berlin will be juxtaposed. 

Guided tours
Guided tours are to be held in German (7:30 pm, 9:30 pm) and English (8:30 pm, 10:30 pm). The duration is about 30 minutes.
