AudioWalk »Body, time, movement«

Our starting point for this walk is Berlin Central Station. It starts by asking how sensory perceptions influence our knowledge. How do we move, and what defines this movement? Our culture? Gender? Mood? And how are perception and motor activity linked to each other? Do I experience a place differently depending on whether I move through a crowd of people with a sense of determination or cautiously? To what extent can other people’s movements be interpreted? Instead of giving clear answers to these questions, this audio walk encourages participants to observe and reflect on themselves. The questions posed and the information presented are linked to the locations. We visit the grounds of the Charité hospital, where one thing is clearly revealed: illnesses influence movement. But history shows that the traditional hospital bed has undergone a historical transformation. Today the aim is to get the patient moving again as quickly as possible. On Campus Nord at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, biology scrutinises scientific explorations of the body: take the microscope, for instance. It creates images that influence our knowledge. Just as space and buildings influence both our movements and the production of knowledge. The walk links perspectives and questions from different disciplines – from philosophy and biology to architecture, art history and cultural studies – and encourages audio walkers to engage critically with the questions and issues that it raises.
