Diego Serra is originally from Argentina, where he earned a Licentiate degree in biotechnology from The National University of Litoral and a Doctorate in microbiology from The National University of La Plata. In 2011 he joined Prof. Regine Hengge’s research group at the Freie Universität Berlin as postdoctoral researcher, initially under sponsorship of an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship. He studies the molecular mechanisms by which the microbe Escherichia coli self-organizes to form architecturally complex communities also called biofilms.
