Ewald Joachim Schwalgin has been Head of the Technical Division at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 1993. He studied Architecture at the Technische Universität Hannover, passed the Final State Exam for Civil Engineering (Building Assessor) and served for 14 years in the State Civil Engineering Department for North Rhine-Westphalia as Head of Unit, where he oversaw the planning, construction management and building control of large public buildings. Between 1991 and 1992, he was seconded to the State of Brandenburg and led the Special Construction Department, which managed construction projects for the State Parliament and the State Ministries. As a civil servant architect, he is behind a number of completed designs, including the extension of Witten District Court, the expansion of a Malakoff tower in Bochum for the medico-historical collection of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the expansion of the Brandenburg Environment Ministry at the Telegraphenberg summit in Potsdam (awarded the Wood Construction Prize for the New German Federal States) and many others.
