Thomas Macho

Thomas Macho has been Professor of Cultural History at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 1993. In 1976 he received a doctorate from the University of Vienna for a dissertation on the philosophy of music. In 1983 he completed a professorial dissertation on metaphors of death in the field of philosophy at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. Thomas Macho co-founded the Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik (Hermann von Helmholtz Centre for the Study of Cultural Competencies) and from 2006 to 2008 he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities III. From 2008 to 2009 he was a Fellow at the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM - International Research Institute for Cultural Studies and Media Philosophy) at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. From 2009 to 2011 he has been Director of the Institute of Cultural History and Theory. Since March 2016 he has been the director of the Internationale Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaft (IFK) in Vienna.

Research fields

Cultural history of time (calendars, chronology, time-measurement, cultural concepts of memory and future, etc.), animal studies, cultural history of rituals (including death, mourning, the new visibility of death, etc.).
